Document Summary

The cell cycle is the life cycle of a cell. It is the set of stages that a cell goes through during its lifetime. Cells go through 5 major stages of development: G1, synthesis (s), g2, mitosis (m), and cytokinesis. Interphase describes the activity in the cell during stages g1, s, and g2. This is the stage of cell when division (mitosis) does not occur. During interphase, the cell grows, acquires nutrients, and replicates both its chromosomes as well as its organelles. G1 phase is the first growth phase of interphase when cells increase in size and make proteins and organelles needed for normal cellular functions. S phase s refers to synthesis because this is where a supplicate copy of the chromosomes is synthesized (built). Dna is replicated in preparation for cell division. It is the 2nd growth phase where dna and the cell is checked to ensure it is ready to undergo cell division.
