BIOSC-139 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Dense Irregular Connective Tissue, Suspensory Ligament, Ground Substance
Document Summary
Table 4. 10 enormous amounts of collagen fibers practically no ground substance. Regular fibers running parallel to each other from where force comes from. Because there are only a few cells in the tissue. So if you have just a few cells than you don"t need much nourishment going on; just have to keep the cells alive & functioning. Fibroblasts make the fibers & maintain the fibers. After tissue is made, all you need is fibroblasts to repair & maintain. Ligaments connect bone to bone [90%] Takes long time to heal if injured tendon/ligament because it has a very poor blood supply, just enough blood to nourish the fibroblasts and there are not many fibroblasts there to begin with. Fibers are supposed to last forever; so just enough to maintain those that are there. Lots of fibers all kinds of different directions (random) Fibers in tissues are arranged parallel in the direction the force comes from/movement occurs.
