BIOSC-139 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Myocyte, Asthma, Intercalated Disc
Document Summary
Third type of tissue muscle tissue (table 4. 14) Smooth muscle found in small intestine. Action is involuntary (can"t consciously move them); brain moves the muscles. Also located in wall of digestive system, walls of arteries. Found in tiniest ducts of respiratory system. Allergic to something causing smooth muscles in tiny tubes in respiratory system to constrict (making the lumen smaller) asthma. Also found in urinary system bladder wall that relax as you fill bladder. Also found in reproductive system muscles that propel semen out of male; also part of the vagina, uterus, cervix in females. Skeletal muscle can be microscopic or several inches long. Muscle cell might have 300-400 nuclei; all nuclei are out right underneath membrane (on periphery of cell) If you can"t create more of them, you have to make each cell bigger in diameter not longer in length. Hypertrophy increase mass by increase size of cells. Hyperplasia increase mass by increase number of fat cells.
