World system theory (refocus level of analysis: core, semi-peripheral, peripheral. Social inequality is the condition under which members of society have different amounts of wealth, prestige, or power. Sociologists are interested in the meanings of these differences (whether they are real or imagined) to both our self and others. The primary form of stratification and inequality: Social class- a social ranking (form of stratification) based primarily on economic position, bus also involves status. False consciousness- viewed their position as fair. Power- ability to get people to do what you want, even when there is resistance. Today we use these 3 components to determine social class in the us. Income- economic gain in the form of money from wealth and labor. Wealth- total of our assets (land, buildings, art, jewelry, etc. ) Education- the best predictor of social class (this is one of the ways we can achieve a higher social class) We represent our social classes through status symbols:
