This an- tagonism leads by itself to the next stage, the stoic consciousness that pretends to overcome the master-slave antagonism in an abstract freedom that is a purely negative freedom. It necessarily becomes a sceptical consciousness that puts everything that is real, including others, in parentheses. However, it becomes a divided self- consciousness, denying reality but affirming its own consciousness at the same time. This unhappy consciousness divides man through a struggle between the finite and the infinite, the eternal and the changeable, the human and the divine. It is an alienated and divided consciousness that pretends to pass to the ex-threshold of immutability. Unhappy consciousness leads to the consequence of overcoming the division of subjectivity and. 1 objectivity, which happens with the appearance of reason (vernunft). Consciousness as reason interiorizes the return to the universal, realizing that reality is nothing but reality.
