Document Summary

These assume that all human behaviour is socially learnt. Criminal behaviour is learnt in interaction with other persons who may be in criminal activities. Hh (2004:337) asserts that criminal subcultures tend to emerge in areas where there is an established pattern of organized adult crime. In such areas a learning environment is provided for the young where they are exposed to criminal skills, deviant values and presented with criminal role models. Adolescent delinquency is a result of societal perception, judgement and reaction to the behaviour in question. It is not the act itself but the reactions to the act that makes something deviant e. g. people label the act of taking someone"s property without permission as theft, and then the person is also labelled a thief. This is whereby someone commits a deviant act and sees it as a mistake. This is labelling by the society e. g. being called a thief, a prostitute or a bully.
