Jackson: states rights democrat, doesn"t believe constitution gives supreme court last word, alarmed by talk in sc that states can nullify new tariff laws if unconstitutional. Bc of fugitive slave act escaped slaves (even if actually free) have no right to jury trial and can"t testify on their own behalf. Lincoln: won"t disturb slavery in the states where it exists but first step in getting rid of it is to stop in from spreading, thought const limited his ability to end slavery everywhere so began pressing for voulentary abolition. Only pres lincolns proclamation officially promised emancipation throughout entire states and welcomed black men to serve as soldiers. 1863: unique year, thousands liberated, gettysburg *emancipation sparked movement. 1863s victories made lincoln get reelected, battle began to pass 13th amendment to totally abolish slavery.
