-Nickname “Hawk” and sometimes “Beans”
-Prominent jazz tenor saxophonist
-First important and influential jazz musician to improves on the instrument
-Creator of the “vertical style”of soloing, using chord tones and long running line in his
improvisation

Lester Young (Aug 27, 1909-March 14, 1959)
-Nicknamed Prez
-American jazz tenor saxophonist
-One of the finest, most influential players on his instrument, playing with a cool tone and
sophisticated harmonies
-Creator of the “Horizontal style” of soloing using repeated tones and lots of space in his
improvisation
-Became a jazz legend, inventing or establishing much of the “outsider” hipster ethos which
came to be associated with the music (use of the word cool for example)
