SC214 Lecture 5: Foodborne Illness and Prevention
Document Summary
Risk perception is the function of the presence of a hazard, the level of exposure, and the degree to which an individual feels threatened and/ord powerless to effect a change in their exposure or outcome status. Ex: flying in airplane v driving a car. We"re exposed less to planes than to cars. No control over plane whereas an individual drives their car. Actual risk is the result of hazard and exposure analysis. Epidemiology: patterns of disease in human populations. Toxicology: study of the effects of exposures in animal populations. Actual risk is a function of hazard analysis and exposure analysis. High hizard with minimal exposure is a low risk. Views are based off of science and reliable sources, objective view. Perspectives are based off of the population. Decision making is based off of the objective assessment of all options. Views aren"t based off of facts or sources, but off of stories, pop culture, friends and families experiences.
