Document Summary

Chapter 1: biology and the tree of life. Organisms are considered alive because they use/acquire energy, are made up of one or more cells, process information, can replicate, and are a product of evolution. Organism: a life form made up of one or more living cells. All organisms share five characteristics: energy: organisms acquire & use energy in order to stay alive and reproduce. All energy on planet comes from the sun & plants convert sun"s light energy to the usable energy: cells: cells are membrane-bound. Its membrane regulates what goes in and out of the cell. They also respond to environment and adjust to remain stable (homeostasis): replication/growth: almost everything an organism does is to achieve the goal of replication/reproduction, evolution & adaptation: organisms are the product of evolution. Living things also have order & organization (towards greater disorder) Theory: an explanation of general class of observations supported by large body of evidence.
