Document Summary
Hlth 220 - lecture 2 - evidence-based nutrition: examining evidence . How much individuals of different population groups (gender, rate, life stage) need to consume. Sound (nutrition) research begins with the scientific method: observation, formulate a hypothesis, conduct an experiment, re-test, share findings in a peer-reviewed journal, develop theory and establish consensus (based on findings of multiple studies) Primary sources: are reports of novel findings and ideas. Peer-reviewed research papers in scholarly journals are the safest source for credible information. Articles are reviewed and scrutinized by peers before being published. These are typically directed at a specialized scientific audience. Other primary sources include conference papers and technical reports of government or private agencies. Secondary sources: are more general works that are based on primary sources. Scientific review articles: written for specialized audience (peer-reviewed) Magazine articles: written for readers with little knowledge of the area (not peer- reviewed) Ex: american scientist, scientific american, the new scientist etc.
