PHIL 116 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Herd Immunity, Externality
Document Summary
Public health ethics - arguably more justification for paternalism beneficence even at expense of liberty. Bc u intervene at population level to improve health of groups. But interventions may not be effective unless most ppl get the intervention. There are negative effects from not complying on other ppl, even though it"s decisions about your own health. Herd immunity - proportion of immunized population below which epidemic can occur. Vaccinations are required by states and public schools for children, who are not making the choice to be vaccinated or not be vaccinated. There are some religious exemptions/personal belief exemptions.
