Code related talk: anytime that the parent pointed to certain features of the word (what letter does the word start with?/ sounding out words: related to the child"s ability to read. Meaning related talk: meaning of the story, linking it to the child"s experiences, what all of the actual content meant: related to the child"s vocabulary skills. Both the vocabulary and literacy skills were related. Demographics related to frequency of code related talk and reading, but not to meaning-making talk. Did not depend on child"s earlier skills! Across multiple domains: increasing exibility and complexity of thought, increasing ability to monitor thought. Developmental processes: brain development, value and access to formal schooling- cultural. In early childhood, self is overwhelmingly positive: 3-4 years old. Over middle childhood, understanding of the self becomes more realistic: not necessarily more negative- just more aware of limitations.
