A. MAJORITY (people in society who have power) VS MINORITY (people
without/ with less power)

II. RACIAL-ETHNIC INEQUALITY
A. ECONOMICS
--Minorities = higher risk for poverty
B. EDUCATION
-- Quantity: Hispanics = lowest levels of education
-- Quality: Less experienced teachers are teaching in schools with mainly minorities
C. HEALTH CARE AND HEALTH
-- On average, Hispanics are the least likely to have health insurance
-- Blacks are 2x as likely as Whites to die from disease, accident, or murder at every
stage of life
D. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM
-- Black person arrested is 3x more likely to be sent to prison than is a White person
committing the same crime
-- Black person’s prison sentence is 6 months longer than a White person’s sentence
-- Blacks are less likely to get probation than are Whites
III. EXPLANATIONS OF RACIAL-ETHNIC INEQUALITY
A. DEFICIENCY THEORIES: blame minorities themselves

Society is structured in a way that disadvantages the minorities but
also privileges the majority
1) History is important
2) Discrimination can occur without conscious bigotry
3) Institutions are interrelated
4) Institutional derogation = media

If you are living in the U.S. and you are White, you automatically get unearned
