Strategic planning is the process of determining the long term objectives of the organization and the strategies to accomplish these objectives. An effective strategic plan can help the organization fulfill its mission by articulating a vision of its role and it"s potential. Strategic planning for a healthcare organization is oriented toward providing services and meeting the needs of the population served. It must focus on determining if there is a consumer demand for specific services and assess if the organization has the resources to provide those services. Part of the realism involves an assessment of the internal and the external environments. During the planning process the organization commits to an action plan to be followed over the next five or ten years. Along the way, goals may be modified or set aside temporary or permanently. There are different ways to conduct strategic planning.
