Communication in Film
Film as Art- creativity, technology, and business
o Varies in format
Having different formats so they can have the same film on different decives.
Change the way the film is shot
Change the format to avoid illegal downloading
Lowers the quality of sound design to be able to be shown on more devices that
only have one speaker compared to having the various speakers of a theatre.

Definition of Aesthetics
o The philosophical study of beauty and taste. It is closely related to the philosophy of
which individual works of art are interpreted and evaluated.
o The branch of philosophy dealing with such notions as beautiful, the ugly, the sublime,
the comic, etc., as applicable to the fine arts, with a view to establishing the meaning
and validity of critical judgements concerning works of arts and the principles
underlying’s or justifying such judgements.
o The study of the mind and emotion in relation to the sense of beauty.
Form and style
o Form- the overall pattering of a film, the way parts work to create specific effects
o Style- films use of cinematic techniques- mise-en-scene (arrangement of everything in a
frame)
Where do film originate
o Imagination, hard work, and the filmmakers
o Machine capturing and transforming image and sound
o Individuals and companies that pay for filmmakers and technology
Creative decisions
o Director-
someone who asks questions about everything. Makes the people working on
the film portray their image of the film.
Manages the way their movie is made

Screen writers, producers, directors, performers, technicians
Solving problems throughout various stages
Business choices (budget, marketing, distribution, payment)
Creative choices- does light affect atmosphere in scene
