Document Summary
Various objects help define the space around you making possible to define the third dimension. Positive volume is characterized by mass and substance. Negative volume is characterized by empty space delineated by positive space most of the time. Positive space is always delineated by negative space. The more objects you have, the less illusion of depth there is. Interplay between positive and negative volumes is called volume duality. Remember volume duality is the dynamic changing relationship between negative and positive volume. When negative volume outweighs positive we experience more. When a space feels open, free, and unrestricted, it is referredto as dominant negative volume. Think about how we were introduced to the tv series lost. Open set: a set with fundamental objects (windows, walls, door, desk) Placing positive volumes along the z-axis to help the camera distinguish among various depth planes.
