Document Summary

Signaling: the signals you give off to others (the school you attend, your gpa, your work experience, etc and indicators of the kind of person you are) Sources of earning differences: worker productivity and specialized skills. More productive and more highly skilled workers earn more money. This is true: across countries the reason why people in developed countries earn more. & across time reason people make more today than they did 50 years ago. Tournament pay: a type of compensation in which the top performer receives higher rewards than other competitors even if they other perform at a slightly lower level (ex. Sushi restaurants usually hire japanese waitresses to make the business look more authentic) To isolate employment discrimination, we must: adjust for differences between groups in education, experience and other productivity related factors, make comparisons between similarly qualified groups of employees who differ only in regard to race/gender.
