Document Summary
Peter perugino, born as pietro vannucci circa 1446, was an umbrian-italian artist who became one of the pioneers of practicing early italian oil painting and frescoes. Fresco is a technique of painting a mural on freshly-laid or wet lime plaster, with water being used to merge pigment with the plaster. Though popularized by the renaissance, fresco painting existed in ancient india and later in sri lanka, as well as in mexican muralism. As part of developing decorations for the sistine chapel, christ giving the keys to st. Peter was commissioned by pope sixtus iv in 1481. The painting depicts a biblical scene from the new testament in which jesus delivers the keys of the kingdom of heaven to saint peter. The painting is located on the north wall of the chapel, which was dedicated to narratives of christ from the new testament, as a opposed to the south wall that depicts narratives of moses from the old testament.
