Is lying always morally wrong? PRP 11
No, lying is not always morally wrong. However, there are many justifiable scenarios that allow
a person to lie. Lying to protect selfish desires or to avoid consequences should never be
tolerated. Considering the scenario that was posed whether or not we would lie to a murder. No
matter how steadfast a person may be to their ideals even a person who believes strongly in
Kant’s principles would not give up his friend. Even Kant would not give up his friend to a
murderer. There are many cases like this where lying seems like the only way but these are some
hard decisions people have to make. The murderer would be using the friend of yours as a means
to some end so is there anything wrong with reversing that principle on the murderer. In a
situation where your lies cause no harm and are not used as a way to achieve some selfish
purpose or goal lying should not be morally wrong. The term ‘lying’ also plays a certain bias in
the way people view things. Imagine a teenage girl who gets raped by a man in her life. If she
finds a way out of that situation by lying to her rapist, should that still be considered lying.
Would any rational being who believes that everyone has dignity should have to go through such
trauma and not do anything, including lying, to not get out of that situation. Lying has been
announced by society to be wrong at all costs but there should be certain situations where lying
should be considered valid.
