Document Summary

Identity group- group of people whose members consciously share a common identity that helps differentiate insiders (group members) from outsiders (non-members) Identity is a psychological concept, it requires some consciousness in the way that they must be aware of the shared characteristic in order to be a part of that identity group. When these identity groups start impacting what we want gov"t to do/not do and influence political action, they become important. Though anything that creates a difference between those who are alike and different can become the basis for an identity group, for many people, the groups they identify with are based on things like: Ethnicity- a group of people who see themselves being united by one of more cultural attributes like common ancestral homeland, cultural practices/beliefs, or common history. Race- a group of people who see themselves with the commonality of some shared physical characteristic, race and ethnicity often get mixed up and confused in the real world.
