Talks about how gender identity forms early in life. The boys and girls try to be like their parents. Has evolved to include the role of culture and development over lifetime. Classic- identification is based on resolution of unconscious conflict with opposite sex parents. Such as seeing dad mow the lawn, boy wants to. Mom is packing bag, daughter wants to also. Contemporary- more emphasis on changing roles of women and man in society. Oedipus complex- castration anxiety due to competition with the father for the mother"s affection. Successful resolution- identification with father (authoritative male figure) leading to superego development and appropriate sex-role behavior. Unsuccessful- develop a value system and sex-roles inconsistent with society. Life lesson- dealing with authority and following societal expectations.
