Traits- dimensions of personality that influence in a particular way a person"s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Contributing factor to the consistency in the expression of such thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Can be used to distinguish among individuals. Behavior is influenced across a variety of situations in a manner consistent with the traits possessed by an individual. Nomothetic approach: objective knowledge through scientific methods, attempts to establish laws & generalizations about people, investigations gain numerical data or data that can be categorized. Investigations gain written information unique to individual being studied. Emphasized the uniqueness and complexity of the whole person. Eysenck- hierarchical traits interested in fundamental dimensions of personality and potential biological bases. Personalistic- trying to understand and explain the complexity and uniqueness of the total individual. For example- jack possess aggressiveness- will determine behavior when playing tennis, driving truck. Refer to traits possessed in varying degrees by all people. Basis of comparison among groups of people.
