ANTHR 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Archaic Humans, Sexual Dimorphism, Prognathism
Document Summary
Most say that they are a branch and an evolutionary dead-end. The most, oldest, and youngest all date to europe. Wide age range (fetus -> old age) Number of individuals represented within a population. Some argue that it was not developed in the same places as ours (occipital region) others say they are very similar to us. Occipital bun = not as pronounced as h. erectus but larger than us (ancestral) Midfacial prognathism (between mouth and forehead), expansion of sinus cavities (derived) Incisors are highly worn suggests high use of front teeth. Taurodont teeth: roots are closer together and the teeth are sturdier and more durable (derived) Radius and ulna, and tibia and fibula are shortened in relation to body size. Long bones (humerus and femur) are very robust and have more muscle markings. The colder the environment the greater the volume to surface area ratio (less surface area = less energy to heat it)
