Document Summary

Why start with chem in a bio course. How atoms react will tell us something about life and how organisms react and how they are organized bio is one molecule reacting with another to change properties and everything. Molecule made up as atoms linked together with covalent bonds. First cell of the molecule is filled with 2 electrons. The second shell known as the s orbital. After the first shell the rest of them are gonna be most stable with 8 electrons. Third shell p orbital contains 1 electron each. If carbon has 4 in the outer shell because of the electrons it can react with four. In biology we are interested in how the atoms react against eachother other atoms to add 4 more to equal 8. Elements - specific and unique number of protons. Atomic number - number of protons in the atom. Isotopes - vary the number of neutrons for an element.
