BIOL 121 Lecture Notes - Lecture 25: Tissue Factor Pathway Inhibitor, Endothelium, Laminar Flow
Document Summary
Antithrombin 3/ heparin- produced by the liver, acts to inhibit thrombin and other clotting factors, action is enhanced by the presence of heparin (don"t need to know the source), we find heparin on the surface of endothelial cells. Heparin can be used a drug and heparinized tubes to prevent blood from clotting in various types of equipment. Problem in heart, brain, and kidney will likely kill you form clotting. Fibrinolytic system is going to remove the clot after bleeding stops. Endothelial cells produce plasminogen (inactive) to plasmin (active), which is an enzyme, breaks clot down in small fragments and makes it water soluble. Endothelial cells- anti clotting and inhibition of platelet activation. Liver plays major role- source of plasma protein, also a digestive system organ, major chemical factory and major breakdown system too, Makes bile salts- help in fat digestion and absorption. Helps in digestion of vitamin k- helps synthesize clotting factors.
