BIOL 121 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Zona Glomerulosa, Adrenal Medulla, Adrenal Gland
Document Summary
All hormones made by the adrenal gland are steroid hormones. Muscle: protein catabolism - proteins --> amino acids. Adipose: lipolysis - triglycerides --> glycerol fatty acids. Immune suppression: cushing"s disease - hypersecretion of cortisol. Aldosterone: mineralcorticoid, affects the transportation of ions by the kidney, can be released in response to acth. Often secreted when stimulated by another hormone angiotensin ii. Does not originate from the anterior pituitary - but through a complex pathway the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (raas) Raas is unregulated when your blood pressure is low in order to reabsorb na+ from specific areas in the nephron and return it to the blood. Release can also be stimulated by increases in blood potassium. K+ is secreted into kidney tubules - in part by increasing the number of sodium-potassium atpase pumps. Sodium enters the blood from the kidney tubule and potassium leaves the blood through the kidney tubule. Releases a chemical mediator - epinephrine - norepinephrine - dopamine: catecholamines.
