Document Summary

The complex link between most phenotypes and genotypes. Phenotype: is an observable measurable characteristic or an organism a phenotype may be a morphological structure (ex. Learning), a physiological process or performance trait (ex. Mating) phenotypes can even be the molecules produced by genes (ex. When variation in the expression of phenotypic traits is directly attributable to the action of alternative alleles at one or only a few genes, the link between genotype is vivid and direct. Phenotypes often occur from response to environmental signals. Polymorphism: is a trait for which multiple, discrete phenotypes can arise from a single genotype, depending on environmental circumstances: threshold of sensitivity to environment. The total variation of a phenotypic trait is the sum of variation caused by genetic factors and variation caused by environmental factors. Morphogens: is a signaling molecule that flows between nearby cells and acts directly to alter expression of target genes.
