PSYCH 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Expected Utility Hypothesis, Psych, Linguistic Relativity
Document Summary
There are two primary utilities for schemas. People have specific roles within situational context. Schemas can actually reinforce stereotypes, such as specific gender roles. Scripts refers to schemas that help us know how to conduct ourselves in specific situations (going to the movies) Schemas are essentially types of shortcuts that allow us to minimize the amount of attention we need in specific environments. Decision making and the usage of heuristics. Normative decision theories describe how we should make decisions. Descriptive decision theories describe how we actually make decisions. A decision making model proposed by neumann and morgenstern, it nonetheless failed to properly account for all decisions people make. People tend to use heuristics, or mental shortcuts, which are fast and efficient strategies they use when making decisions. At the same time, they often lead to cognitive biases. Anchoring occurs when people rely on the first piece of information that comes to mind (when making judgements)
