Controlled thinking can sometimes override automatic thinking or impulses: counterfactuals. Although an example of controlled thinking, counterfactual thoughts are not always intentional or controllable. Trying not to think about something: monitoring vs. operating processes, ironically, sometimes the target thoughts become more accessible when trying to suppress them. People can also attempt to suppress their feelings (emotion suppression: suppressing thoughts or emotions can be bad for your mental health.
