PSYCH 104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Psych, Diminishing Returns, Recreational Drug Use
Document Summary
According to social impact theory, it depends on: Strength: how important the group of people is to you. Immediacy: how close the group is to you in space and time during the in uence attempt. Number: how many people are in the group. Social impact theory predicts that conformity will increase when strength and or immediacy increase. Conformity will increase as number does, but only up to a certain point (diminishing returns) When the in uence comes from people we care about. Our perceptions of a group"s norms in uence our behaviour, even if the perception is factually wrong (e. g. recreational substance use) Encourage prosocial behaviour (e. g. increasing donations to charity or environmentally-friendly behaviours) Reduce the occurrence of antisocial behaviours (e. g. sexual assault) Become aware of what social norms are operation. Find an ally who thinks the way you do. Gather idiosyncrasy credits (usually conform, so that some deviations are accepted)
