ANTH 207 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Clovis Point, Salmonidae, Pleistocene
Document Summary
If we look at the spread of clovis points around the us they"re widespread but with very clear gaps like in the great plains and the northwest. Also the idea that this represents movement that creates daughter populations as well as interacting with the people who are already there. Points found in ohio are gainey-clovis fluted points which can be distinguished from other fluted points as distinctive to the region. Area, muskingum valley is wide with ridges on both sides which would have provided good sight lines for large animals. Evidence of sites along the ridges and evidence of production at the quarries. No large sites, evidence of small groups moving. Flotation done here, one of first times, found fish (possibly salmon or salmonid) plant remains that are standard for a summer occupation like raspberries. Don"t appear to be big game hunters. Structures were probably tent-like stuff that could be put up and taken down fairly quickly.
