Sociology—> the formal, scientific study of interactions, groups, social institutions, and how they
impact one another. (interaction- exchange of ideas, approach and make convo, both acted and
reacted to each other, two or more parties involved
1. interactions = when the actions of one person impact on another person’s actions,
directly or indirectly (indirect action - looking up eisenberg on rate my professor; we had to buy
the books like she posted the book list and effected how we spend some money - without
actually knowing each other)
2. groups = 3 or more people who share values, goals or identity that is important to how
each person defines him or herself (technically were just an aggregate - collection of people due
to geographic or social reasons - ) oh shit vvv
a. aggregate = collection of people that share common geographic location
(today, were all aggregates; eisenberg hopes that by the end of the class we’ll be a group)
3. social institutions = the formal, and informal, norms, rules and values that shape our
actions (when we walk into a classroom, were not going to change the seating style from rows
to something else because we were taught not to) (law govt family)
“free will” = opportunities to do anything they want - do you have free will? not the money to do it
but eh
Social Psychology differences
1.Psychological social psychology = focuses on intra personal (internal) aspects of
human behavior in terms of how physiological, emotional, and mental conditions of the brain
affect human behavior
2. Sociological social psychology = focuses on the inter personal aspects of human
society. Specifically - it is the formal, scientific study of human society from the perspective of
individual interactions and their impact on groups, social institutions and structures
what makes humans unique is our ability to use symbols - herbert mead
^ created an american for of socio (uniquely american form of sociology - called symbolic
interactionism aka social psych)
theory of mind = explains what makes humans uniquely social creatures by
differentiating between gestures and significant symbols
