About 18,000,000 (18 million) jews worldwide (6 million in the u. s. a) Circa 1900 bce, when abraham was called to leave his home in ur and travel to canaan, which is a land promised from god to give to his descendants, also know as the promise land . There is just one and only god who created the universe and who has a profound interest in the jewish race, who are his chosen people. The land of israel was given to the jews by god. Most basic beliefs of judaism, as codified by maimonides: Prayer is to be directed only to god. The words of the prophets are true.
