Conformity: the tendency to change our perceptions opinions, or behavior in ways that are consistent with group norms (when people are free to do as they please, they tend to imitate each other) Explicit or unspoken rules about how we should behave. Scherif study (little light that isn"t moving, ask a group of three how many inches it moved); typically the outlier that comes to agreement with the norm of the group. Scherif: because of ambiguity, participants turned to each other for guidance (informational conformity, private acceptance of belief: want right answer); Asch: found self in awkward position ( normative conformity, public conformity, no private acceptable of belief, fear of ostracism: want to fit in) Compliance: talking fast and catching people off guard means getting higher rate of compliance, language of the request. Langer (1978)- ask for something, with a reason (or even irrelevant reason) will get higher rate of compliance.
