Sparta and Athens
The polis:
• Greek institution
o City and immediate hinterlands

Sparta:
• Three classes:
o The equals – the alike; full legal rights, full political rights, brought up
to defend Sparta, kept hair long
o Periokoi – people aoud; esidet alies, people ho did’t hae full
rights but still an important part of society
o Helots – slae class, Myceaea’s, kept hai shot, ad ee euied
to reproduce.

• Kings, 28 equals (older than 60 years of age), and 5
ephors (important overseers)
o Krypteia
Spartan Society:
• Militaristic
• Society: equals and helots
