Composed of lava with relatively little ash. Outpouring of fluid basaltic lava, flows in sheets building up over time. Examples: hawaiian islands (hot spot), iceland (rift zone), galapagos islands. Large volcanoes, created by hot spots (hot spot) Smallest type of volcano, usually not more than 1000 feet. Produce little lava and large amounts of pyroclasts. Examples: sunset crater, az; craters of the moon, idaho; paricutin, mexico. Associated with subduction zones - most located around the pacific ocean basin. The most common type of volcanic rock on the surface of the earth is basalt. In the classic hotspot model there are heads and tails. The deccan traps are thought to be the result of the reunion hotspot head underplating the indian lithosphere at 65 1 ma (r29). Many large igneous provinces result from fissure eruptions. Most hotspots can be traced back to massive volcanic eruptions of flood basalts, creating lips.
