GEOL 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Geomorphology, Subsidence, Porosity
Document Summary
Natural levees: piling sediment along rivers to prevent flooding of surrounding towns. Alluvial fans: form on flat land and is the lowest the stream flowing through it can go. It would form a lake at the end but its too dry to actually form a lake. Geomorphology: shape of things on earth : drainage patterns. Dendritic: look like branches of a tree. Start off as few and lead to many little branches. Happens when there are sets of joints of rocks with 90 angles. Trellis: highly folded rocks that fold up and down more resisted rock sits up tall and less resisted rock slouches down. Stream piracy: look up in textbook. Floods: occur when a stream overflows its normal channel, can be good because they deposit sediment, can be disastrous because buildings get destroyed by water. Regional floods: occur when large areas are inundated with a great deal of rain or snowmelt over a span of time.
