Working memory: working memory: limited capacity system for temporary storage and manipulation of information for complex tasks such as comprehension, learning, and reasoning, working vs. short-term memory. Stm holds information for a brief period of time. Stm consists of a single component whereas wm consists of a number of components: wm is concerned with processing and manipulation of information that occurs during complex cognition, baddeley"s worki(cid:374)g (cid:373)e(cid:373)ory (cid:373)odel. The central executive is where the major work of working memory occurs: phonological loop. Two components: phonological store: limited capacity, holds information for a few seconds, articulatory rehearsal process: rehearsal that can keep items in phonological store without decaying, three phenomena that support idea of a phonological loop, phonological similarity effect. Letters or words that sound similar are confused: word-length effect. Memory for lists of words is better for short words than for long words. Takes longer to rehearse long words and to produce them during recall: articulatory suppression.
