PSY 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Human Genome Project, Litter Box, Boogie 2Nite
Document Summary
Development across the life span: issues in studying human development. Nature-nurture interactions: genetic component but it can still be changed; exp. ) shy kids can learn to be outgoing; temperament, mental illnesses, phobia. Chromosomes- threadlike structure made largely of dna molecules; paired strands each cell- has 46 chromosomes; 23 pairs in females (xx) , 23 pairs in males (xy) Human genome project- landmark research that identified every gene in the human genome; somewhere in the 20,000s of gene segments. ; genetic decay eggs have been in the body for 50 years already. Conception (fertilization)- one sperm shares genetic material with one egg (ova) and now it is a complete cell; fertilized egg is called a zygote. Critical periods- times when environment (food, stress, drugs, smoking cigarettes) can have an impact on development. Teratogens- any environmental factors that can caused a birth defect (x-rays, chemicals, stress, cigarette smoke, cocaine, alcohol)
