Introduction to biological anthropology, week 2, lecture 3. Graduated at christ college in cambridge- didn"t perform well in school. He was recommended for a position as a naturalist on a 5-year scientific expedition- Hms beagle: needed someone to collect biological samples- darwin did this, the captain needed someone to eat dinner with. England, to coast of south america, he observed brazil, argentina, etc. Then went to galapagos islands, australia, indian ocean, south africa, and then back to england: really long journey it was five years. Experiences that influenced his thinking: observation of diversity of flora and fauna aboard hms beagle- cannot get in. Made the geological processes that shaped south america real- the same movement of the earth"s crust of earthquake made the andes mountains. In argentina collected bones/fossils of animals that didn"t exist: observation of diversity in ground finches across the galapagos island chain. Birds on different islands were all different.
