Opposed durkheim: social solidarity needs to be more of a real life circle. 3 types of reciprocity: reciprocity: exchange of goods and services, of approximately equal value between 2 parties, generalized: a type of exchange between closely related people; without expectation of return (ex. Parent to child: balanced (or symmetrical) reciprocity: a mode of exchange between loosely-related individuals or groups: expectation that something of equal value will be offered in return. We don"t want it to appear as financial transactions, rather than something given from the person the gift is never separated from the giver. Gifts are bound up with culture, we give gifts because we use gifts as a vehicle for kindness.
