BISC 3166 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Sensory Neuron, Thermoreceptor, Nociceptor
Document Summary
Exam 1: sensory receptors transduce different types of energy or signal, from environment or within the body itself, into action potentials, specific sensory receptors are most sensitive to a single type of energy or signal. Stimulus ----------- receptor potential ------------ change in pattern of action pot. (hypo or hyperpolarization) in a sensory pathway. Types of receptors: simple free nerve ending- unencapsulated; nerve endings in tissues, complex receptor pacinian corpustle- encapsulated receptors: tissue- associated nerve endings, specialized sensory receptor- such as mechano, thermo, chemo, etc. These can detect stimuli from thermo, mechano, and chemo receptors. 10-3: olfactory, most pathways project to thalamus, equilibrium pathways mostly to cerebellum. Limbic cortex paleocortex (amygdala & hippocampus) - - primitive needs, emotions. Thalamus - major relay station - pass on to specific sensory areas in the cortex. Non- specific pathways ras thalamus, pons, medulla - non-specific sensory path ways terminate here - regulate state of awareness.
