Document Summary

The tipping point (darwin, his times, and the science of evolution) Evolution: the process of change that has transformed life on earth from its earliest beginning to the diversity of organisms living today. Some properties of life: energy processing, order, growth and development, evolutionary adaptation, response to environment, regulation, reproduction. 1. 1: the study of life reveals common themes. There are 5 unifying themes: organization, information, energy and matter, interactions, evolution. Theme: new properties emerge at successive levels of biological organization: levels of biological organization. Reduces complex systems to simpler components that are more manageable to study: emergent properties. Properties that emerge at each level and are absent from the preceding level. These are due to the arrangement and interactions of parts as their complexity increases. Systems biology: exploration of a biological system by analyzing interactions among its parts, structure & function. Analyzing a biological structure gives us clues about what it does and how it works.
