Document Summary

Big picture: relationship between human society and physical environment. Geographers study the movement of several different types of phenomena. Geographers examine places on a scale of generality to understand their significance. What is there, why is it there, and why do we care. Place: defined by unique characteristics (physical geography, human geography); we feel like we know - emotional/sentimental connection. Relative: position of a place or entity based on its positive with respect to other locations. In this class, we focus on the top 2. Region: larger sized territory that encompasses many places, most of which share similar spatial attributes (no single unifying characteristic); 12 major regions: 1st world: rich, capitalist countries; most developed countries; low fertility (smaller families) 2nd world: communist (until 1991); level of wealth did not separate this from first world but more of the political and economic structure. 3rd world: poor and less developed; ldc, periphery, developing; higher fertility (bigger families)
