Pluralism: a society that is diverse in some way, whether in terms of ethnicity, Societies = based on idea of common identity religion, language, etc. Early-modern societies: didn"t all have that insistence on uniformity. Development of national identities, us (often vs. them ) Large, organized, agrarian society with substantial population, social hierarchy, cities, and some distinctive cultural aspects that persisted over a long period of time. Often nomadic societies, not connected to cities, often without strict social hierarchy. Often seen as direct threats to "civilizations" Ottoman empire, mongol empire, etc. all founded by barbarians" Incredibly diverse empires, see 9/18 notes about ottoman management of diversity, unity. In east asia, chinese, those who used classical chinese, confucianism. = civilized, everyone else = barbarians (according to chinese) Japanese = barbarians as well according to koreans.
