HIST 1011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Textile Industry, Mass Production, Class Consciousness
Document Summary
Industrial revolution (~1800) improved income > living standards > life expectancy. Limits of the early modern world economy. Manpower was limited to, well, the number of men. Extraordinary burst of technology which when joined with use of inanimate power created change. Inanimate power = not produced by living beings (power sources = water, wind, coal at the time) Done by individual households, usually whole family would be involved in process. Industrial revolution made it possible to spin a lot more cotton into thread, making use of inanimate power, then used other machines to weave thread into cloth. Factories had to be located by power sources, like rural areas with large areas. With invention of steam engine, could locate factories in cities instead > larger possible workforce. Huge pollution of air (coal), contamination of water sources (chemicals into water) Created capitalist system, work for others who work for others who participate in global economy.
