Mexican war ended in 1848 - america got california and new mexico. People in that area could choose to go to mexico or stay as an american citizen. Lots of native americans lived in this area too o. Idea that the west was undeveloped/ open so indians would be protected and not encroached. Between 1872-1874, 4 million buffalo were killed by whites. How were indians problematic according to federal govt. They had their own government and religion. Govt. finds itself supporting tribe o o. Indians were living on reservations and still holding land as a community. Was meant to give land to native americans and turn them into farmers o. Took away power from indian government and put it in the hands of the federal govt. Doesn"t look forward in time, when the next generation need land, it wont be there it"ll all have been sold. Assessment- good for govt. tried to help didn"t.
