Document Summary

Common usage: theories often regarded as hypotheses and speculation. Theory: a well developed, inter-connected set of ideas and propositions about how the world works. Paradigm: broader framework accepted by a scientific community. Uncertainty about the intentions/capabilities of others compounds mistrust and security concerns. States are the dominant actors in the system. States must look out for their own security (self-help principle) States are rational actors: they have a clear goal (security) that they pursue in a calculated manner. Structural realism: structure of international system predetermines what will happen. Neo-realism: the international system generates a general tendency toward competition. Offensive realism: states seek to maximize power and pursue hegemony, competition is intense. Ex) us vs china, china striving to overcome us in power. Defensive realism: states seek security, can cooperate under some circumstances, depends on the intensity of security dilemmas. The motives/goals of states vary, theses aren"t system-level factors, but they matter. Greedy/aggressive/hegemony-seeking states vs needy/defensive/ security seeking states.
