PSC 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Hindutva, Sadhu
Can Modi Deliver a New India?
• Globally, Modi is seen by major world powers as a leader
o can achieve the great transformations that his predecessor, Manmohan Singh,
failed to bring about:
• Creating a more dynamic economy
• Creating a policy environment that is more receptive to foreign capital
• Three contradictions
o He managed this task by deliberately steering clear of communal messaging and
presenting himself as someone who stood for vikas, or development— and vikas
alone
• In doing so, Modi accomplished two goals:
▪ He tapped into the aspirations of young voters
▪ Young voters blamed the corruption and ineptitude of the
Congress party for an economic slowdown and a lack of
opportunities to better themselves
▪ He managed to rebrand himself as a politician concerned about all
Indians and not just the welfare of one section of the population
